Well, I hadn't paid any update fees in 2 years, so I guess that's not too bad.Д¤. $200 - that covers me for all updates and new plugins for my Platinum package for the next year.

I had to upgrade my Waves plugins by subscribing to the Update Plan. I've already upgraded Protools to the latest version, so I'll just need to reinstall the 100MB package again on the new machine and transfer all my session files over.ДЈ. After the transfer, I'll still need the 800/400 cable to hook up my Digi002R interface for Protools LE. I think the wireless will take several hours vs a few minutes (probably a mistake to use wireless - it was just so easy though). That will enable me to do the rest of the file transfers at Firewire speed (much, much faster than wireless networking). I picked up a FW800-to-FW400 cable ($30), so I can use what's called 'Target Disk Mode' and treat my old G5 as a Firewire drive. At least the local dealer was willing to do it in about 1/2 hour while I went out for a Starbucks run.Дў.

That was $50 I wouldn't have spent if I had ordered wireless networking WITH the Mac.

I forgot to order the wireless networking card when I ordered the Mac, so I had to have a local dealer install it in order to have it covered under my 3-year AppleCare warranty. It's transferring files right now and I can hardly hear it working.ДЎ. One thing I noticed right away: the DVD drive is pretty noisy when I was installing Logic Studio (one of several apps I use), but the internal hard drives and fan noise is really quiet. I could do it faster over ethernet or over firewire - which I may end up doing once the initial accounts are set up. I'm doing it over my wireless network so it's relatively slow. My account settings and associated files are automatically transferring via the Migration Assistant tool right now. Yeah, I'm in my element setting up my new toy. This isn't something I just learned (I DID do some research before buying), but I haven't had the time to get the necessary cable yet. The new Macs only have Firewire 800 (no FW400 any more), so I will also need a FW800-to-FW400 adapter cable for my Digi002R (off to Best Buy or Fryes tonight). Unfortunately, the new mac only has DVI and a 'mini-display port' connection for video, and my PC's monitor only had a VGA cable (but also had a DVI connection), so I had to find a DVI cable. Like.I needed to get a 2nd monitor temporarily (so I can see what's on the old G5 and the new 8-core at the same time), so I borrowed my 19' LCD from my PC.

Maybe I'll even do a mini-blog of progress. I'll probably post a few 'gotchas' and 'lessons learned' for the knowledgebase here. I haven't figured out what I'm going to do with more than 4x the power, but I'm sure I'll have fun finding out. My current dual G5, which has served me well for about five years is being prepped for trade-in. Guess what I'll be doing this weekend (starting tonight no doubt). It arrived yesterday.my shiny new Mac Pro 8-core Nehalem with 6GB of RAM, 640GB System drive and 2 extra 1TB hard drives, 512MB graphics card, Gigabit Ethernet, 5 USB 2.0 ports (plus two on the keyboard), wireless networking, four Firewire 800 ports, and other goodies.
